A Letter from the Principal

My name is Patti Garrett and I am the new Principal of Jonata Middle School. Naturally, many of you are curious to know more about the person who will guide Jonata. In June 2003 I completed a two-year administrative internship program at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. That same December I completed a clear professional credential though the Santa Barbara County Education Office. I hold a masters degree in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education, a Bachelors degree in Liberal Studies with supplementary authorizations in science and computer applications, and a Multiple Subject teaching credential.
On a personal level, my proudest accomplishment is raising my son, Blair Tanger, to be a kind, caring, and hard working young man. Blair is studying to be golf professional though course work, a full time job at Morro Bay State Golf Course and an apprenticeship with a veteran professional. I enjoy surfing, diving, kayaking and most anything that keeps me close to the sea. I also practice Tai Chi, enjoy weight lifting and a good walk!

My professional background includes extensive teaching experience (first through sixth grade), a multitude of experiences providing professional development to teachers, and part time teaching at the university level. As a senior coordinator for the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education, I had a leadership role in curriculum development and implementation, especially in the area of educational technology, program improvement, teacher observation and initiation of school-based professional development.

My first goal is to listen and learn from the people who know Jonata best: students, teachers and parents. Ultimately, my focus for Jonata will be for us to become an even stronger and more effective community of learners and a place where both students and staff feel proud of accomplishments.
